Frequently asked questions
What exactly is HK?
Health Kinesiology is a very gentle, non-invasive system of holistic health care that can be used on any age group - even babies or the elderly. It is used to treat existing conditions, but also as a preventative measure, and to maintain optimum good health.
How long will it take?
Sessions last approximately 1 hour, and there is no need to undress. The average number of sessions required is 2 – 3 however t is dependent on the individual’s concerns and issues.
What can HK do for me?
Because HK does not focus on specific symptoms but corrects imbalances throughout the whole body/mind system, the list of health problems which it can help or alleviate is endless! HK removes excess stresses from the client's life, which then frees the body/mind to tap into its innate ability to heal itself.
Where did HK come from?
Health Kinesiology was invented by Dr. Jimmy Scott (an American who now lives in Canada). HK was originated from principles developed from the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture and from Applied Kinesiology as used by chiropractors. Instead of using needles or manipulation, the HK practitioner simply holds various energy-points on the body to bring the body's energy system into harmony and balance. This allows the body's natural healing mechanisms to work more effectively with the result that the client's health problems start to disappear. HK is a very powerful system that looks at the whole person - their psychological, spiritual and emotional state, their physical condition and also the condition of their subtle-energy system and chakras.
How does it work?
HK uses a muscle-testing technique that accesses the body to determine where blockages lie along the body's 14 energy meridians. Using this information, the skilled HK practitioner will perform a range of correcting techniques specifically designed for the client's concerns and for their overall health and well-being.
What is muscle testing technique?
The client lies down on a couch, with one forearm resting at right angles to the couch. The HK practitioner gently exerts a light pressure on the arm to ascertain the level resistance that the client's muscle is able to give. If the muscle relaxes and 'gives way' this is interpreted as a "NO" response. If the muscle remains strong and rigid, this is interpreted as a "YES" response. By presenting the client's body with various stress items and then testing the response of the arm muscle to see whether it relaxes or remains strong (NO or YES), the practitioner can discover what weakens the client's energy system, and more importantly what strengthens it!
The HK practitioner then follows a tried and tested series of muscle-tests. This allows the practitioner to identify precisely what is stressing the client's system at that time, and then to perform the energy corrections necessary to relieve that stress. By relieving the stress on the system, the body/mind will be freed to implement its own self-healing mechanisms, and the symptoms will diminish and disappear.
What sort of stress items may be found?
The most common stress item is simply a particular thought or emotional feeling. The client may be asked to think about a particular situation in their life that they find distressing or difficult to cope with. While the client is thinking, the practitioner will hold their acupuncture points to relieve the blocked energy built up in their meridian energy system. Other common stress items used during an HK session are magnets, flower essences, foods, chemical substances or homoeopathic substances.
What are energy meridians and why are they important for our health?
The Ancient Chinese discovered subtle pathways of energy that run around the body just under the surface of the skin. They mapped these pathways and marked various points along the pathways as being particularly significant. They found that by inserting needles into these points, they could release excess, blocked energy from the pathways. There are 14 main meridians on the human body - two of them run directly up the centre of the body, one at the front, one at the back, and the remaining 12 meridians are bi-lateral - i.e. they are in pairs, one on the left and one on the right of the body. The Chinese discovered that each of these meridians directed energy into one of the main organs of the body (for example, we have a pair of meridians each for our Liver, Heart, Lungs, Kidneys etc.). If the meridian becomes blocked, or malfunctions in some other way, the organ does not receive its usual amount of energy and becomes 'under-energised', and therefore does not work as well as usual, causing symptoms in the body. An organ can also become 'over-energised' when too much energy is directed into it by the meridians.
The Chinese also found that certain emotions tended to under- or over-energise particular meridians, and so our thoughts and our emotions can influence the functioning of our internal organs. For example, the Kidney and Bladder meridians are particularly influenced by 'fear' and 'anxiety'-type emotions, and Iwe can all remember occasions where we have felt fearful and have had to visit the toilet more often than usual!
What sort of things can HK help with?
HK corrects imbalances throughout the whole body/mind energy system, so the list of health problems which it can help or alleviate is endless!
After a session will my problems come back?
Once your problems have been correctly dealt with, and the practitioner has muscle-tested that no more work is needed, then your problems should not return. However, major life traumas or changes in circumstances can stress the body once again, and so we would recommend regular once or twice-yearly 'top-up' sessions as a preventative measure. HK can also help with Geopathic Stress, which is negative energy emanating from the earth. This is more prevalent in some places than others, so if you move house, or change your place of work, and then start to see a recurrence of your symptoms, it may be time for some more HK work to deal with the Geopathic Stress.

If you want to learn more about Health Kinesiology, there is a very readable book on the subject, called Health Kinesiology.
It was written by Jane Thurnell-Read, who is the pioneer who established HK in Britain. The book is the standard reference work and required reading for all HK practitioners. You can buy it online from HK UK or from Jane's web site. www.lifeworkpotential.com
